Today I'd like to share with you what one of our staff members had to say about working as a withdrawal specialist.

"The first experience a student has of the Narconon programme is our drug-free withdrawal.

Students usually arrive feeling pretty horrible and expecting to have a very rough time of it. They arrive nevertheless; willing to confront the experience as they know the road to happiness starts in withdrawal.

They get a very pleasant surprise when they find the withdrawal step is not as bad as they expected it to be, proof of the saying that when you confront something it is usually not as gruesome as you may imagine.

The reason why our withdrawal step can be a relatively smooth ride, lies in the tools at our disposal which were developed by humanitarian and founder of the Church of Scientology L. Ron Hubbard and used by William Benitez, who started the Narconon programme in an Arizona State Prison, in America in 1966.

Drugs create various nutritional deficiencies in the body that can make a person so sick that the experience of withdrawal cannot be endured. This is why many people cannot stop using the drug.

We handle this with a calcium-magnesium drink called cal-mag and a combination of vitamins and minerals. While the body is withdrawing, we are loading it up with vitamins and minerals that rebuild it quickly.

Two other essential techniques to withdrawal are a very light massage that helps the body to relax which handles various aches and pains. This is done in a calm and peaceful environment.

The second technique is a locational which assists a person to locate his surroundings which gets his attention off of his body. This is done while walking through our lovely green gardens which encompass two fish ponds.

The withdrawal specialist is with the person twenty-four hours a day to get the person through their withdrawal with minimum discomfort.

It has been my privilege to have worked many hours in withdrawals to see the person safely through the first step of the programme and delivered in good shape to the next step, where life changing physical and mental improvements can be achieved.

It is a personal pleasure to watch them blossom as they advance through their programme.

One cannot say that the programme is not hard work for both staff and student but the rewards for the student and staff are so profound, they are more than worth the effort!

It is a joy to be involved and to witness daily, people getting their lives and happiness back.
