Welcome to the Narconon Newsletter.
There are so many people of goodwill doing what they can to help
others and improve conditions in our society. We are very
fortunate to meet many of these people through the kind of work
we are doing here so it makes sense that we help each other to
achieve the end goals. We are re-publishing this newsletter as
there has been an increased demand over the months for our
advice and leadership in the field of Rehabilitation from all
kinds of people of good will. Those people include the police,
religious groups and community leaders. We aim to service these
groups more and there are many projects underway at the moment
which I am sure you will be hearing more about soon!
Some time ago we had two very special guests at Narconon
Hastings. The father of one of our former students, who is a
psychotherapist and is working with underprivileged youngsters
who have fallen through the net, came with one of his colleagues
to do some training in the methodology we use at Narconon. The
purpose being to further increase their success in effectively
helping these young people to re-direct their lives in a
survival manner.
These guys had a lot of fun here and in their own words here is
what they had to say:
“I
have been a UKCP registered psychotherapist for 6 years and have
in my time worked with many issues that have caused distress and
suffering to numerous people. With the application of
therapeutic interventions that have been drawn from many
modalities, I have been able to facilitate these clients to find
their own solutions.
I now also work with young people aged between 16 and 21 that
have fallen into a dangerous area of not having employment,
training or education. As a result they run the risk of
mortality from any number of associated risks, most notable of
which are alcohol and drugs. A recent study showed that as many
as 16% of this group are dead within 10 years! When this
statistic is examined this equates to a staggering and horrific
statistic of 6 deaths per day!
I came to Narconon Hastings with an objective of understanding
the methodology behind the very successful rehabilitation of
substance abusers. I had no clear idea of what to expect but was
prepared to do whatever I was asked to meet this objective.
I began with looking at a book that detailed’ Learning How to
Learn’. I felt somewhat surprised to discover that this book was
aimed at children, further than that it was aimed at very young
children! Oh no! I thought, this is not what I need, I already
know how to learn having successfully studied for four years for
my post graduate diploma in psychotherapy. What are they
thinking that I am stupid? However I stuck with it, and through
the material I realised that there were a great many things that
I have gone through life not understanding. Not only that but
all the time that I have laboured and sweated ‘blood and tears’
to gather the knowledge had been not only avoidable but
unnecessary!
What I discovered through this programme was that there are
simple errors in the way that I understood how to learn that
once corrected made the absorption and understanding of any
information both easy and enjoyable! I was liberated and
revitalised in my attitude to study, and was now actually
looking forward to a research project that I was about to
commence!
I then went on to do the’ Ups & Downs in Life Course’ and I
discovered that there were many influences that I had little or
no awareness of that had a massive effect on my life. People and
influences had affected my journey through life. Having become
aware of this it was like a light going on in a very dark room!
Not only that but I have the tools and skills that I have
practiced to handle these influences in the future! So
empowering.
Given my objective of helping young people I now have, what I
consider to be the most powerful, empowering and ground-breaking
(in my experience) tools that not only support but equip young
people for their future!
A thank you seems so inadequate for the personal development
that I have experienced. More so for the tools that I now feel I
have to help young people.
Personally I look forward to working with all that I have
learned and experienced and from this point, what has happened
to me will positively influence the future of innumerable young
people in the future.”
Chris Haygarth PGDHP, UKCP
Clinical Psychotherapist
“My name is Gary Harley. My background is as a Youth and
Community Worker and now a psychotherapist. I first got involved
with Narconon when my son became addicted to cocaine and spent
time at Narconon. I was very interested in the way that Narconon
worked with their students and very impressed by the simple and
powerful way that life skills are delivered on the various
courses.
I now do some intervention work with young people labelled
N.E.E.T.’s, not in education, employment or training. Over the
last ten years, this category aged between 16 – 24 years has
been dying at a rate of 6.3 per day from alcohol or drug related
causes. That is 22,350 over a ten year period. I knew that the
Narconon life skills programmes would help.
Myself and another colleague called Chris came to Narconon to
spend a week completing the ‘Learning How to Learn’ course and
the ‘Ups and Downs in Life’ course and also looked at other
materials. Our intention is to take this learning out into the
community and deliver it to N.E.E.T.’s young people. We intend
to give these young people the tools they need to allow them to
re-engage into education, training or employment and to give
them a positive view of the future and to allow them to become
happy and healthy positive members of their communities.
I have gained so much by being here at Narconon Hastings. The
remarkable staff and positive students have made us feel so
welcome. This is the first training course I have been on that I
did not want to leave at the end. I am full of energy for the
task ahead and looking forward to returning very soon.
Thank you for all that you have given to us.”
Gary Hartley.
