The final course on the Life Skills part of the Narconon programme is
"The Way to Happiness" This course is a study of a non religious moral

will also learn how to help others around them. Once a person has
completed this last course they are then ready to graduate from the

A.H. is mid-way through the final part of Book 7. Here is what he had
to say about it:-
"This has been one of the most emotionally fraught elements of the
course that I have done. Tougher than the sauna; more intense than the
objectives; as vital as books 5, 6 and 7. Indeed it is those steps that
I have already taken that truly prepared me for the handling of my past
ethics conditions and my family. Having spent the past few years before
arriving at Narconon putting my parents, brother and sister though
concern, disappointment, anger and desperation this was my chance to
confront the consequences and make up for the damage. I have done so. I
feel that I have laid the foundations for a valuable and honest
relationship with my family.

When students start the Narconon programme the first thing they do
are the Training Routines (TRs). These are then repeated prior to
starting the session work in order to prepare the students for the
session work.
Here at Narconon when students go into session we do it differently
to other rehabs. We get two students to work together. The term we use
for this is a twinship. The main reasons we use this technique is to
bring up a persons responsibility for somebody else which in turn brings
up their responsibility level for themselves and also to develop trust

The 3 major phases of our drug rehabilitation programme are
withdrawal, detoxification and rehabilitation. Today I'd like to talk
about the detoxification phase of the programme. The definition of
detoxification is "To extract poison or toxins from something". This is
what we do with our sauna programme. As you may already know, drugs and
alcohol are poison/toxins. Too much of them can kill a person.
Unfortunately, drugs residues stay in the bodies fatty tissues for years
after use and can affect a person at a later time. Detoxification from
drugs is therefore an important part of the success of any treatment.
Substituting one drug with another is not detoxification. It is
substituting one poison with another! Our detoxification programme is an
exact daily regime of nutritional supplements, supervised exercise and
periods of time sweating in a dry sauna to rid the fatty tissues of
these drug residues and toxins.
When Fiona came to Narconon she had been taking heroin for around 6
years, this had taken its toll on her family. She is now mid-way into
the detoxification part of the programme and is doing very well. What
follows are her own words.

Narconon is a non-profit organisation whose aim is to eliminate drug
abuse and drug addiction through drug prevention, education and
rehabilitation. Narconon is a registered charity and although the cost
of the programme may appear high we would not be able to operate as
effectively without the kind donations of time and money that we have
from people.

Some students come on the programme just wanting to do the New Life
Detoxification programme, but we do encourage everyone to do the whole
programme. We know that students are much more likely to stay drug and
alcohol free if they complete the whole package. Here is what one of our
current students, Sanjay, who just intended doing the sauna, but has now
stayed on, has to say.

The holidays are supposed to be a happy time. This is what the ads
and Santas in the shopping precincts tell us. Unfortunately, the
families of addicts often find that the holidays are anything but happy.
Believe it or not, the best time for drug or alcohol
rehabilitation is during the holidays. The addict is kept safe,
leaving everyone free to enjoy themselves. A happy new year is in the
making for all, as the addict begins on a new road to a new life.
Celebration continues throughout the year.

When a student completes the Narconon programme there is a graduation
ceremony where the student usually gives a speech or has it read for him
by a staff member. Here is what Said who recently completed the
programme had to say.

journey is far from complete. Let me take you back to how it started....

Narconon clients are not treated as "patients" but as "students" who
are learning to regain control of their lives. This is an important
distinction. A Narconon student addresses the problems caused by drug
use with new abilities; new skills for life.
Once a student has completed their withdrawal they start work on the
first of the life skills courses "The Therapeutic Training Routines
Course". Here is what one of our current students had to say about the
course.

A vital part of the Narconon programme is the Life Skills Courses
which are a series of books. The following success story is from a
student who has just completed Book 7 "The Changing Conditions in Life"
Course. This course enables the student to evaluate the state of
different parts of their lives and how to change these for the better,
step by step, until not only one achieves a more desirable condition for
each but the student can also see how they can achieve all their
worthwhile plans.
"I just finished Book 7 Handling Conditions in Life and I did it
with a 100% written exam result!!!....

Today I'd like to share with you
the success of the Narconon programme from the point of view of a parent
of an addict. This is what the mother of one of our students wrote to
us.
"My son started the Narconon programme in February of this year. This
followed several phone calls to Narconon and our decision to go ahead.

The Narconon programme gives heavy emphasis to improving a
person's ability to deal with life. Some of the areas addressed are
confronting skills, communication skills, study skills, integrity,
anti-social versus social people, goals and social conduct. The
result is an individual more comfortable with his life and able to
do well. The practice of these skills is extremely therapeutic in
and of itself.

Today I'd like to talk about the
Narconon detoxification programme.
The New Life Detoxification (sauna) programme is an integral part of
the overall Narconon programme. The main barrier to a successful
rehabilitation is the craving for drugs or alcohol. The New Life
Detoxification programme is used to reduce or eliminate these cravings.
It uses a combination of exercise, induced sweating in a sauna and
nutritional supplements.

I found it difficult to string together a sentence. My journey started
on February 17th and I was taken into withdrawals. My main vices were
cannabis and ecstasy...

James who recently completed the programme said.
"On the car ride to Narconon I was barely able to look my parents in
the eye, I was so ashamed. For the past 7 years I have put my family
through hell with my substance addiction and yet they never once gave up
on me for which I will be eternally grateful.....

Drug addiction affects not only the person themselves but
everybody around them; friends, family and colleagues. Family
members and friends are welcome to visit students during the
programme to give them their support and to see how they are getting
on. This is what the sister of one of our current students, wrote
after seeing him recently.

Today I'd like to talk about how people
get addicted to drugs.
No one intends to become addicted to
drugs or alcohol. Unfortunately many of us do. Addicts don't
become addicted with the intention to destroy their lives
and to cause upset to those they love. These conditions are
the by-product of addiction. The addict lies to everyone,
things start missing around the house, and the dishonesty
conveyed is proportionate to the severity of the addiction.
These things are apparent to those living with an addict.

Narconon clients are not considered or treated as "patients" but as
"students" who are learning to regain control of their lives. This is an
important distinction. A Narconon student does not enrol to recover from
an illness; they enrol to learn something that they don't already know.
They address the disability caused by drug use with new abilities and
new skills for life. A lot of support and great camaraderie normally
exists between the students on the course.

The Narconon programme takes between 3 to 6 months
to complete, sometimes longer. It is not a quick fix solution as
quick fix solutions do not work. The Narconon programme is a
comprehensive rehabilitation programme. The aim of the programme is
to produce graduates who know that they are capable of living a
happy, ethical life free from drugs and alcohol. Here is what one
student wrote upon completion of the programme:-

The full Narconon programme is intended to produce graduates who can
stand on their own feet and live drug or alcohol free, ethical lives
thereafter. Our graduates do not go to weekly meetings for months after
completion, nor do they describe themselves as "recovering." A student
who has graduated from the programme has recovered. He or she has
obtained a new orientation in life. The premise of the Narconon model is
that a former addict or alcoholic can achieve a new life.
Here are some success stories from our current students on different
parts of the programme.

Today I'd like to talk about book 3 which is one
of the books on the life skills part of the programme. This book is
the learning improvement course. This is a short, but very powerful
course that gives a person some new techniques on how to study more
effectively towards the result of a real world ability to apply
information learned to their lives. This information is needed in
all subsequent courses to ensure the students get the full benefit
of the programme and is extremely helpful in all areas of life.

I would like to take this opportunity to describe the final two
courses of the Narconon programme.
Part of the drug rehabilitation process includes helping former addicts
take responsibility for past misdeeds, which provides tremendous relief
from the guilt of those actions. Once this is accomplished the
individual has an opportunity to repair the damage one has caused, and
thus improve the condition of his or her life. Part of the Narconon Drug
Rehabilitation Programme is specifically geared toward helping the
individual through these steps.

I would like to take this
opportunity to describe the first part of the Narconon study
programme.
Communication skills are frequently poor in drug and alcohol users.
In fact, drugs and/or alcohol are often being taken to avoid
confronting life or communicating with others. Yet drugs themselves
further reduce the ability to confront and communicate.

For the drug addict lack of
self-confidence, inability to communicate, loss of self esteem,
deterioration in health and weight loss are all symptoms of drug or
alcohol abuse. This impacts not only the individual but also the addicts
family and friends. The addict becomes a different person often resorting
to deception and even crime to support his habit. I attach a letter from
the fiancée of a student who is just about to complete the Narconon
programme, which talks about her experiences.
